If glass fibres are added to an immiscible polymer blend, then the polymer with the highest affinity to the fibres will adhere preferentially to the fibres displacing the other. In this research we studied the possibility to take advantage of this property and to use the component with the highest affinity to the fibres in small quantities (minor phase) as “glue” between the fibres. We made, therefore, “glass fibre reinforced polymer blends”, where the fibres form a continuous but not dense network. In addition to improved mechanical properties, network connectivity can result in other special properties, such as , e.g., conductivity if the fibres themselves and the minor phase are conductive materials. This research vombines the science of polymer mixing with composite technology and is focused in the very interesting scientific problem of the dynamics of preferential surface wetting where a liquid displaces another liquid.

Όταν ίνες γυαλιού προστεθούν σε ένα μη-αναμίξιμο μίγμα πολυμερών, το έλασσον συστατικό θα προτιμήσει να εδραιωθεί στις επιφάνειες των ινών, σχηματίζοντας έτσι έναν συνδετικό ιστό για τις ίνες.
