Abstract
3-D numerical simulation method was developed to describe the flow between kneading disks and the barrel of the fully intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder. The 3-D FEM mesh covered the whole space within the barrel. The parts of the mesh that were occupied by the kneading blocks at each time did not participate in the flow. The interface between "block" mesh nodes and "fluid" nodes defined the boundary and the boundary conditions. The velocity profiles, stress fields and accumulated strain and energy were thus calculated. Kneading blocks stacked at several angles forward or backward were simulated. The different pumping and mixing characteristics of these different arrangements were compared.
