Candidates for the M.Sc. Program must have a first degree
in a scientific or engineering discipline related to Geo-technology
and the Environment in order to be eligible for admission
in the Graduate Program. If the degree was obtained from a
foreign University, it must be recognized by the Hellenic
National Academic Recognition and Information Center (Hellenic
NARIC), Athens, Greece. Holders of a Master's degree (recognized
by Hellenic NARIC) are eligible for direct admission in the
Ph.D. program.
Graduates of universities of recognized standing who meet
the necessary academic requirements for admission to the Graduate
Program of the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering
are offered advanced courses of instruction and up-to-date
research facilities. A candidate can be admitted in the Department’s
Graduate Program with either regular or qualifying graduate
student status. A regular-status graduate student is admitted
as a candidate for a higher degree or diploma. For graduates
of the Technical University of Crete (5 year program), the
normal minimum requirement for admission with regular graduate
student status is a Diploma in Engineering degree (or a similar
program with intensive specialization in an appropriate discipline)
with a cumulative grade point average of at least 70%. Applicants
holding a bachelor's degree in a discipline other than that
in which they wish to undertake graduate work will be considered
in the light of their undergraduate course program and their
achievements in this program. Admission to all graduate programs
is limited and competitive. Consequently, admission is not
guaranteed for those who meet the minimum academic requirements
for admission.
A qualifying student is one whose academic qualifications
would normally entitle the student to serious consideration
for candidacy but who is considered inadequately prepared
for advanced work in the proposed field of study. Admission
as a qualifying student may in special cases be offered to
those who do not meet the admission standards for regular
graduate student status. Qualifying students will take a program
of courses, normally for one academic year, as determined
by the Department. The program will normally consist of a
majority of undergraduate courses. Upon completion of this
course program the student may be considered for admission
to a Master's degree program. If the student is accepted as
a degree candidate, retroactive degree credit for some courses
taken during the qualifying year may possibly be granted but
credit towards the residence requirements for the degree will
not be granted.
It is recognized that it is not possible to identify all
situations with regard to acceptable admission requirements.
An applicant whose background does not fit into the normal
requirements, but who may present other compelling evidence
of ability to succeed in graduate work, may also be considered
for admission on an individual basis. Applications for admission
should be made on the special application forms which may
be obtained from the Secretary of the Department. Full instructions
concerning the application procedures are included with these
forms.
Completed application forms and all supporting documents
must be sent to the Department. Applications may be submitted
in August or January after the call for applications. The
majority of entering students commence their studies in September.
Information about the timing of entrance to a program should
be obtained from the Department. Applicants who have graduated
from universities other than the Technical University of Crete
may be required to take Examinations if so requested by the
Department.
Applicants whose mother tongue is not Greek must furnish
evidence of their proficiency in the use of the Greek language.
In some circumstances, the Department may request the candidate,
if admitted, to complete successfully a special course of
modern Greek language given at the Department of Linguistics
of the University of Crete in the city of Rethimnon in Crete.
Official letters of admission are sent only by the Graduate
Program Committee of the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering
and are valid only for the date of commencement of studies
indicated thereon.
